Todays blog post is my review of Kiss of a Dragon by Alisa Woods. Having sold poorly among its first readers, the novel suffered from a prolonged period of neglect. A masterclass of metafiction, many of the events are narrated twice first by the 'editor', who gives his account of the facts as he understands them to be, and then in the words of the 'sinner' himself. The plot follows a staunch Calvinist, Robert Wringhim, who believes he is justified in killing those he believes are already damned by God. It has been called a Gothic novel, a psychological mystery, a religious satire, and an early example of modern crime fiction. The webcomic went on hiatus in mid-December 2016 as Beaton switched focus to a graphic novel she was working on, though she continued to post sporadic updates on her Tumblr. Also, rather than use Alt Text, Beaton usually accompanies each comic with a short paragraph. Like most webcomics, there is little continuity between entries, and it rose to fame through Memetic Mutation taking hold on a few comics. Recurring themes include Beaton visiting her younger self, Canada, a pony called " Fat Pony", and a story about a sailor who meets a mermaid. Hark! The former killed the latter on the island of Egilsay at Easter, creating another much loved Scandinavian aristocratic saint, to whom the very beautiful cathedral in Kirkwall is dedicated, replacing the smaller church dedicated to St Óláfr. The most notorious example involved the feud between Þ orfinnr's grandsons, the cousins Hákon Pálsson and Magnús Erlendsson. The earls of Orkney were often in the habit of killing their kinsmen to ensure their own grip on power. It might be that kinsman Þ orfinnrĪnd indeed, Rǫgnvaldr's uncle and rival earl, Þ orfinnr Sigurðarson and his men turn up and make short work of killing him to consolidate Þ orfinnr's power. We received multiple copies of each when our daughter was born, and both have become baby shower gift staples. However, as I alluded to earlier, they are also probably the two most popular books in the world to give to new parents. And Goodnight Moon and The Runaway Bunny are the world’s most popular illustrated zen mantras for children. Reading board books to the very young is a meditative experience, which, I’ll admit, I miss now that my daughter is older. As you read Margaret Wise Brown’s verses aloud, you can watch your child get sucked into the cadence of the words and the details of the illustrations and just see this sense of confident calm spread across their faces. They have this amazing rhythm to their text, which is somehow both calming and stimulating. On the contrary, Goodnight Moon and The Runaway Bunny are such ubiquitous baby reads because they’re really damn good. This is not to say that either of these are bad books. 70% of the universe's missing dark matter is made up of copies of "Goodnight Moon" |
